Mission Skatepark, Mission District, San Francisco
The thing I like about the skatepark is that there is such a camaraderie around the edges, then once you drop in, its all you. They all seem so focused, and so in the moment of what they're doing.

High School Football

I have been freelancing, shooting high school sports lately. Shooting sports is all about anticipation, and a fast enough shutter speed...

back in the darkroom...

i have recently re-joined the darkroom in San Francisco...the largest working darkroom in the country. there is something so personal about being in there that i cannot describe. its just you and your work, and everything else literally fades away, because you can't see it even if you tried...

People are always resistant to put their profile in front of the camera. I think it is my favorite way to take portraits. I feel like it shows a more peaceful aspect of the person, and also leaves a certain amount of mystery...

New Project: Mission Skatepark

I moved to the Mission District of San Francisco a few months ago. There is a skatepark a few blocks from me that I ventured over to about a week ago, and twice more since. It seems to be more than just a place to go to skate, but a community, and one where age seems to be irrelevant. I like that. It is part of a whole, but the same time, it is such an independent activity. It seems so reckless, but has such beautiful form. Most of all, it looks so liberating, yet demonstrates so much control. A nice balance. I am starting a body of work on it...

Quiet on the Pavement, Grand Rapids, MI

Dead birds are so ironic, and i think that is why they are such fascinating finds for me. It's not necessarily the deadness, but the symbolism that i appreciate. The recognition of ground versus sky, the peacefulness that seems to resonate in either state, and the useless wings. They are all significant to me.

Pic of the Day

(I don't think the boxing people will get this image) I love it because I think even from the back, you can imagine the intensity of the face. Sometimes its what you don't see that counts...

I am

in love with this sport because of the idea behind it: Stepping into the ring, its only you.

I am not sure

I am not sure what it is that has me so inspired when I am ringside. It might be the lights, or the thrill, or the crowd, but I don't think it is. To me, photography is capturing a moment that is otherwise passed right by; noticeable, but forgotten a millisecond later; a split second of real emotion; a split second perhaps no one else is supposed to see. And I think that is what has me so inspired.

Thought of the Night

I don't think life (mine specifically) would be much of anything without a struggle. I think its the work behind things that make them truly satisfying.

Julaton-Alcanter Boxing Match

On Friday, February 25, I got the opportunity to shoot for Fight News, one of the most established boxing websites. The main event was the 'Return of the Hurricane,' (referring to Ana Julaton), at the Craneway Pavilion in Richmond, California. Ana Julaton, a Fillipino-American fighter, was defending her title against Francesca Alcanter, from Kansas City, MO.

Here is the post on FightNews

Shooting a boxing match isn't the same as watching one. You don't necessarily get to see the big picture, or every hit, and are contorted, ringside, camera under the ropes, trying to get the perfect shot. It is exciting, but its not always easy to assess who should be the winner. On Friday, it was pretty clear...

Pic of the Day

This weekend I will be venturing up to Pollock Pines again, riding Amtrak, so I thought it seemed appropriate to post a photo taken from the window of Amtrak last time I traveled...Also, my friend Kevin is traveling on Amtrak from city to city to figure out what his next move is....pretty awesome adventure, and one that makes me consider the possibilities...

Pic of the Day

This photo was taken with my pinhole camera; no secret. I was carrying around my P-Sharan, and this man yelled out, "WHATS THAT...A BOOMBOX?" haha. Then I told him that it was a camera, and he seemed interested...I asked him if I could take his photo, while he told me about loving the Grateful Dead and being a DeadHead back in the day. After I was done, he asked to see the picture; pretty savvy homeless man, being familiar with digital photography.

Pic of the Day

On Friday I photographed at War @ the Wharf here in San Francisco. I have never photographed at a boxing match before, but it didn't take me long to adapt to the environment. It was far and away the best event I have ever photographed, and I hope there is many more to come. I love the fast-pacedness of it all, the excitement, and the challenge of capturing the passion that these fighters have for what they do. I was inspired, to say the least. Being so close, you can feel that this sport is more than just punching people; its an art, a community, and a following.

Lady, Dia de los Muertos Festival, San Francisco

Dia de los Muertos is my favorite event in San Francisco. Despite people dressed in "scary" costumes, and face-painted like skeletons, it is a day to celebrate people who have lived. It always takes place at night, and can be perceived as creepy, but its really beautiful when everything is lit by candlelight.

New Start

I moved into a new art studio in the Mission District of San Francisco. I am sharing the top floor of this weird warehouse with 4 other artists, who are all really awesome. I'm excited to be immersed in creative energy. Its going to take some work, but should be fun to get up-and-running. I finally have an excuse to start going to home depot on a regular basis again. haha.

I just picked up my new 27" iMac today. I am so excited, because I no longer have to work on a 13" laptop screen. Expect great things...

including & especially some photo illustrations. my favorite :)
