Mission Skatepark, Mission District, San Francisco
The thing I like about the skatepark is that there is such a camaraderie around the edges, then once you drop in, its all you. They all seem so focused, and so in the moment of what they're doing.

High School Football

I have been freelancing, shooting high school sports lately. Shooting sports is all about anticipation, and a fast enough shutter speed...

back in the darkroom...

i have recently re-joined the darkroom in San Francisco...the largest working darkroom in the country. there is something so personal about being in there that i cannot describe. its just you and your work, and everything else literally fades away, because you can't see it even if you tried...

Pic of the Day

People are always resistant to put their profile in front of the camera. I think it is my favorite way to take portraits. I feel like it shows a more peaceful aspect of the person, and also leaves a certain amount of mystery...

New Project: Mission Skatepark

I moved to the Mission District of San Francisco a few months ago. There is a skatepark a few blocks from me that I ventured over to about a week ago, and twice more since. It seems to be more than just a place to go to skate, but a community, and one where age seems to be irrelevant. I like that. It is part of a whole, but the same time, it is such an independent activity. It seems so reckless, but has such beautiful form. Most of all, it looks so liberating, yet demonstrates so much control. A nice balance. I am starting a body of work on it...

Quiet on the Pavement, Grand Rapids, MI

Dead birds are so ironic, and i think that is why they are such fascinating finds for me. It's not necessarily the deadness, but the symbolism that i appreciate. The recognition of ground versus sky, the peacefulness that seems to resonate in either state, and the useless wings. They are all significant to me.

Pic of the Day

(I don't think the boxing people will get this image) I love it because I think even from the back, you can imagine the intensity of the face. Sometimes its what you don't see that counts...

I am not sure

I am not sure what it is that has me so inspired when I am ringside. It might be the lights, or the thrill, or the crowd, but I don't think it is. To me, photography is capturing a moment that is otherwise passed right by; noticeable, but forgotten a millisecond later; a split second of real emotion; a split second perhaps no one else is supposed to see. And I think that is what has me so inspired.
